FINECO – INECO Foundation for Research in Cognitive Neurosciences

FINECO was created by Dr. Facundo Manes, neurologist and researcher (CV), in 2008. Members of the professional staff who belong to the Foundation are highly reputable physicians who have contributed to advancements in the fields of neurology and psychiatry through extensive research and publications in the most prestigious scientific journals worldwide. Many of them have been awarded multiple honors both in Argentina and abroad, and have been guest lecturers in conferences and symposia around the world.

Some of the most important contributions of our research group include the identification of brain areas related to decision-making processing in human beings, the neural mechanisms of aggressive behavior, the role of the insula in cognitive and emotional processes, the understanding of the brain mechanisms involved in the development of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), the characterization of a novel syndrome called Transient Epileptic Amnesia, and the development of a new neuropsychological battery for the early detection of frontotemporal dementia. As well, our group described for the first time in the literature, the emotional processing of patients in the minimally conscious state.

FINECO has engaged the world of cognitive neurosciences with a strong commitment to support research programs for the prevention, detection, and treatment of cognitive and behavioral disorders, both by stimulating scientific training for health professionals and raising awareness in the community about prevention and treatment in Cognitive Neurology and Neuropsychiatry.
FINECO’s goals include:

  1. To contribute to the scientific and technical training of professionals in the field of cognitive neurosciences and neuropsychiatry.
  2. To promote, encourage, and develop interdisciplinary work teams for the development and discussion of programs and plans aimed at achieving higher efficiency in the prevention and treatment of patients with cognitive and behavioral problems, as well as their families.
  3. To support professionals in the basic sciences (biologists, mathematicians, physicists, etc.) to work in an interdisciplinary fashion together with health professionals on research targeting basic processes of the human brain functioning.
  4. To identify outstanding students and give them the opportunity to develop their ideas in an adequate intellectual environment, thus increasing our scientific and cultural heritage.
  5. To train national talented professionals in the best research and medical centers around the world, stimulating their reinsertion in the country to contribute to the development of cognitive neurosciences locally. Often times, our most brilliant youngsters fail to find the proper spaces to use their skills in Argentina, which has brought brain drainage increase to alarming levels.
  6. To promote the development of novel clinical programs and new clinical procedures for the prevention and treatment of neurological and psychiatric diseases.
  7. To support the exchange of Argentina professionals with international leaders in cognitive neurosciences and neuropsychiatry for the discussion of patients, scientific, and clinical projects
  8. To develop and maintain the FINECO Museum of Neuroanatomy in honor of Professor Tomás A. Mascitti.
  9. To educate the community about various issues concerning the prevention and treatment of neurology and psychiatry.
  10. To promote workshops to help caregivers and relatives of patients with dementia and other diseases.
  11. To support teaching and education, both of individuals and health institutions, through grants, and scholarships that relate to the goals of the Foundation.
  12. To develop academic relationships with prestigious institutions both nationally and internationally under the goals of the Foundation.
  13. To organize lectures, courses, conferences, symposia, and seminaries targeting the community, aiming at providing information about neurological and psychiatric disorders, and sharing the scientific advancements concerning their prevention and treatment.
  14. To provide support and assistance to patients with cognitive and behavioral problems, as well as their relatives and caregivers.
